Self-Control: “God has given our children much to enjoy, but the source of our pleasure can so easily become the cause of our pain when not governed by self-control.” We will discuss practical ways we can teach our children self-control in the key areas of anger, sexuality, and avoiding excesses.
Eye to the Future: “Teaching our children to consider the future and eternal impact of their choices is a difficult but critical task.” We will look at how we can encourage our children to find the appropriate balance between living in the present and planning for the future.
Questions for Reflection:
- Think about each of your children. What areas of self-control are they currently struggling with?
- How can you focus your influence to help your children develop the muscle of self-control?
- On a scale of 1-5 how well do you think each of your children consider future consequences?
- How can you give your children a glimpse of living for eternity?
Digging for Wisdom (See file attached below for Scripture Verses):
- Read 2 Peter 1:3-11. How is self-control related to spiritual growth? How can you cultivate this fruit in your own life and your children’s lives?
- Read Genesis 4:6-7, Psalm 4:4, and Ephesians 4:26-27. What do these verses tell us about anger? Is it a sin? When does it become sinful?
- Read Matthew 6:25-34. What is the difference between planning for tomorrow and worrying about it? How can you teach your children this difference?
- Read Proverbs 3:21-26 and 4:25-27. How can you help a young child begin to think about future and eternal consequences?
We will meet this Thursday, November 01, from 9.30 – 11.30am at 2/F Island ECC. Refreshments and childcare provided.
