“He who fears the Lord has a secure fortress, and for his children it will be a refuge.” (Proverbs 14:26).
“Reverence for God’s holiness is the rock upon which all wisdom stands. Without it, you become as a god for your children; you define right and wrong; you declare truth. Fear of the Lord is the foundation of guilt-free motherhood, forcing us to relinquish illusions of wisdom and claims of ownership of our children. Fearing God cements our parenting in the unchanging, unwavering and trustworthy truth of our Creator.”
We will discuss what it means to fear the Lord, why the fear of the Lord is key to parenting, and practical ways we can fear God in motherhood.
Questions for Personal Reflection:
- Why is the fear of the Lord the beginning of wisdom for you as a mother?
- Honestly evaluate your own attitudes and behaviours. In what ways do you model a reverence for God? Respect for authority?
- How do you balance teaching your children to fear God with teaching them to trust his love? How do your relationships with your children demonstrate this balance?
- What ground rules, traditions, or disciplines in your home teach your children a reverence for God’s authority?
Digging for Wisdom:
- Does God really want his children to be afraid of him? (Ps 25:14, Is 8:13, Luke 12:7, 1 John 4:18)
- How does fearing God relate to humility before the Lord? (Prov 3:7, Prov 8:13)
- How does consistent, loving discipline help our children? How does it relate to fearing the Lord? (Prov 19:18, Prov 22:6, Prov 29:15-17)
